What is gunpowder tea?
Gunpowder Tea is so-called because it is rolled in small balls reminiscent of the old gunpowder.
The leaves of Gunpowder Tea Green Tea are vaporized, rolled tightly into small balls, and dried.
Not all gunpowders are rolled by hand. The high quality ones are hand-rolled, but the others are machine-rolled unless labor is cheaper than buying a machine.
The difference in taste is noticeable. As has been hand-rolled usually means higher quality, the taste is much more subtle, not at all rough; it has a very mild first taste and a delicious lasting aftertaste.
Gunpowder Tea is a well-known Chinese green tea from Zheijiang Province.
The production of Zhu Cha dates back to the Tang Dynasty (618-907).

This process allows the leaves to maintain their delicious taste and tempting aroma.
The Chinese name for Gunpowder Tea is Zhu Cha, which means Pearl Tea, due to its appearance similar to bright grey pearls
The tea leaves were manually rolled up after a pre-drying and then left to dry with that shape.
To this day most of this tea is usually laminated and rolled with machines and only the highest grades are still made by hand.
The main production centers where the best-known varieties of gunpowder green tea are located come from China (Pingshui Gunpowder), Taiwan (Formosa Gunpowder), and Sri Lanka (Ceylan Gunpowder).
There are also several types of green teas that are usually rolled in “gunpowder”, including Chunmee, Tieguanyin, Guanyin Huang, and Ding Dong, as well as oolong and some high-end jasmine teas.

Does gunpowder tea contain caffeine?

How to make gunpowder tea.
To make the perfect cup of gunpowder tea, first, heat the cup and use a measure of half a teaspoon of tea per person – boil the water, but be sure to add it when it has already stopped boiling so that all the beneficial properties of tea are not lost.
Let it rest for about 3-5 minutes while the balls are slowly open.
The leaves can be used a second time and even a third.
This is a tea that is drunk without adding milk; Adding a small amount of sugar can highlight its taste and reduce its bitterness.
You can drink it at any time of the day and even during meals – it can be very refreshing if served with ice.
Another way to enjoy Gunpowder tea is to take it as you drink in North Africa for hundreds of years – mix it with mint leaves and serve it with sugar; it’s refreshing and especially delicious on a hot day.
How to prepare Gunpowder Tea.
Place a teaspoon of tea leaves on the bottom of a cup.
Heat water to about 160o Fahrenheit.
Pour four to five ounces of water over the tea leaves.
Let the tea leaves rest for 2-3 minutes.
Strain the loose leaves from the cup before drinking.

Gunpowder tea made with green tea is likely to be safe when consumed in moderation as a drink.
However, people sensitive to caffeine may experience headaches, nervousness, or insomnia when they take it.
